I always thought it was "tight grip on your booze"

I'm pretty sure it's "booze"....the rest of the lyric makes more sense that way, "cherish well your thoughts-- "thinkin'"--and keep a tight grip on your booze-- "DRINKIN'" are all you have today.

Fun song either way.

Never seen the lyrics in print so I guess I should go there. Booze sounds more in keeping w/ the subject matter but I've always known the song as Boots. I always figured that after a hard night of drinking, your passed out and a cowboy comes by sees your boots w/ better soles than his. You wake up not only w/ an underage girl and a hangover but w/ a pair of old brokedown hole in the sole boots.
99% I'm way off-base and booze is the word (or is bird the word http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WNrx2jq184 ) ?
